How to turn failure into an advantage

This article was last updated on November 10, 2021

Did you ever attempt to do something and fail miserably? How about the first time you tried to ride a bike or the first time you tried to swing on a swing set. I’m betting you probably fell and got hurt every time for about the first 50 times. I know I did, I have a scar to prove it!

Failure is a huge part of life, and anyone who denies or tries to avoid it is bound to ironically ‘fail’. You cannot avoid failure. Whether your trying to ride a bike or trying to start a company, you will most likely fail the first few times. But this is ok! Failure is ok and it’s even good! When used correctly failure can help you in ways you could never even dream of. Or conversely, if used in the wrong way it can hinder you and work against you.  So here you go:

3 ways to turn failure into an advantage

1. Use failure as a learning experience

Every time you fail you learn something, whether you know it right away or not. If you fall off a bike the first time because you didn’t pedal, the next time you know you have to pedal to not fall. If your company fails because you can’t ship items in a safe way and the goods are constantly damaged, the next time you start a company you know the delivery of goods in a safe way is paramount to operation. Etc. There is something to be learned in every failure, and if you don’t repeat your mistakes and you learn from them then you are on the right track guys!

2. Use failure as a tool for improvement

When you see others failure how do you react? Do you make fun of them or think to yourself what can I improve upon from their performance to give me an edge. You can learn just as much from others failure as you can from your own. Look to see where others made their mistakes and improve upon them. Keep this in mind the next time you go to demean someones failing performance that you can learn from his failures, like you don’t need to repeat others mistakes, you can use them as a lessons!

3. Use failure as a benchmark for motivation

Name one time you failed miserably. Now say to yourself you never want to feel that way again. From there do everything in your power to improve yourself so you never feel like that again. It’s that simple. Use failure as a benchmark for motivating you to reach higher and higher goals.

If you use failure to your advantage you will be one step ahead of everyone else. Most people fail and give up and this is the main reason why they don’t succeed. The biggest difference between those who succeed in life and those who don’t is that when successful people get knocked down 7 times they get up 8 times!  Most people tend to laugh at those who fail because they themselves have never taken a risk. I know because I used to be one of these people. I used to take the high road and look for the shortcomings of others to taunt and make myself feel better. Don’t be this type of person. Reinforce others and learn from their failures.

Above all do not be afraid of failure. This is the surefire way to mediocrity. The old saying high risk, high reward has never been more true. Embrace failure, learn from it, and live the life you want!
